Dear Colleagues and Partners of the Obesity Community,

Obesity has emerged as one of the most consequential chronic diseases of the twenty-first century. Globally, more than one billion people now live with obesity, a figure that has more than doubled since 1990. The Asia Oceania region is home to more than half of the world’s population and is experiencing the fastest-growing obesity epidemic globally. Rapid urbanization, the nutrition transition, and increasingly sedentary lifestyles drive this phenomenon, albeit with considerable differences among countries in the region. Critically, Asian populations develop cardiometabolic complications at lower body mass indices than Western counterparts, underscoring the need for region-specific clinical thresholds, diagnostic criteria, and therapeutic strategies.

Indonesia exemplifies the complexity of this challenge at scale. It is experiencing a rapid increase in the prevalence of overweight and obesity, with nearly one in three Indonesian adults being overweight or obese. While the numbers were more prominent in urban centers, they are rapidly increasing in rural populations, which are also experiencing the burden of undernutrition. The downstream consequences translate into an enormous and growing burden on individuals, families, and the national economy alike.

Meeting this challenge demands more than clinical innovation alone. It requires a sustained, multi-stakeholder commitment to treat obesity as a complex chronic disease. It is precisely this commitment that the Asia Oceania Conference on Obesity 2026 (AOCO 2026) is designed to advance. Under the theme “(need to be discussed)” AOCO 2026 will bring together the region’s leading researchers, clinicians, and policymakers in Jakarta, Indonesia, from 15 to 18 October 2026 to share evidence and knowledge, as well as forge partnerships for obesity care across the Asia-Pacific.

Our program in AOCO 2026 will incorporate a rich tapestry of keynote lectures, symposia, and workshops, spanning the latest advances in obesity pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy, surgical and non-surgical interventions, digital health technologies, behavioral medicine, and health policy. We have made a particular effort to incorporate the voices of early-career researchers and to ensure strong representation from countries across the Asia-Pacific. We warmly welcome your partnership and look forward to building a collaboration that advances both scientific progress and meaningful patient outcomes. We look forward to seeing you at AOCO 2026.
