I am pleased to announce that the 68th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy (JSDT) will be held from June 16 (Fri) to 18 (Sun), 2023 at the Kobe Convention Center. This Annual Meeting is a yearly venue for many experts, researchers, and company representatives working in the field of dialysis medicine to gather together and engage in lively debate and exchanges of views. It also offers the opportunity to gather the latest information and knowledge in dialysis management and dialysis medicine. It is a great honor to have been appointed President of such an important Annual Meeting, and I am conscious of the weight of responsibility involved.
Since 2020, the global spread of COVID-19 has caused great trouble for JSDT members and our associates as we have engaged in clinical practice, research, and education under pandemic conditions. While expressing my deepest sympathy, it is my fervent hope that we will be able to escape as soon as possible from the closed conditions imposed by COVID-19, and that social activities and functions will quickly recover.
The theme of this Annual Meeting will be “Unity of Knowledge and Action: Utilizing Skills and Putting Knowledge Into Practice .” As I am sure you are all aware, this first phrase was the philosophy of Chinese Ming-dynasty statesman and philosopher Wang Yangming, who held that knowledge that has only been heard is not true knowledge, and that truth can be known only through action. The field of dialysis medicine has developed from its starting point in dialysis therapy, a groundbreaking treatment that is life-saving for people suffering from renal failure. The practical application of knowledge that is dialysis therapy can thus be considered as the origin of dialysis medicine. It is because so many of our predecessors utilized their skills and put their knowledge into practice that dialysis medicine has advanced. I believe that we medical professionals and researchers involved in dialysis care and dialysis medicine must continue to utilize our skills and use this as the foundation to put our knowledge into practice, with the aim of raising the level of dialysis care still further. I want to make this Annual Meeting the starting point for knowledge and skills relating to advances in dialysis care and dialysis medicine, and it would make me extremely happy if in a few years’ time, people are saying “The research that first sparked this technology was discussed at the 68th Annual Meeting.”
In 2023, I hope to be able to meet you face-to-face in Kobe and engage in lively discussions. Please do submit your abstracts and attend the Annual Meeting! Thank you for your support.
