BSIR ASM 2023 - British Society of Interventional Radiology (BSIR) Annual Scientific Meeting
Date: 8th - 10th November 2023
Venue: ICC Wales, Newport, UK
Dear colleagues,
Planning every BSIR ASM, where we draw on the experiences from the previous year and present fresh ideas for the new programme, is an honour. This programme, most of all, serves to highlight what is the best of our interventional radiology community and provides a backdrop for us all to get together as a family.
Through this year’s programme, we hope to provide content suited for every stage of IR- from the immensely popular Diagnosis to Discharge sessions, to the highly educational State-of-the-Art and Plenary sessions.
In Arterial Interventions, we will be looking at the latest advances in the management of chronic limb ischaemia and discuss controversial topics in below-the-knee arterial disease. Visceral arterial interventions allow us to understand the management of these pathologies better in the D2D session.
Similarly, in another D2D session, we look to explore current topics in aortic disease and understand their diagnosis and management. In the panel discussion, we look to our experts to help unpick the controversies in aortic dissections.
Our Venous Disease D2D session explores various topics in venous thrombotic disease in the limbs, ileocecal system and mesenteric venous system. Vascular Access Society of Great Britain and Ireland (VASBI) meets BSIR in our venous access session with a stellar speaker line-up. We also take a deep dive into pulmonary thromboembolism as well as talk to the experts on controversies in the management of portal hypertension.
In the Embolization sessions, we look at its applications in emergencies. With the growing literature and demand in prostate artery embolization, we get our panel of experts to give a verdict on current controversies on the topic.
Within the non-vascular topic track, we will pay particular attention to the growing role of IR in thyroid disease. We understand from the experts the latest advances in lymphatic interventions. We also have a special session “New frontiers in pain management,” planned around the growing role of IR in this field.
The Interventional Oncology track is always popular and one of the most rapidly evolving applications of interventional radiology. This track will scrutinise locoregional therapies in HCC and focal therapy in renal cancer. Our panel discussion explores the role of IR in oligometastatic disease.
The sessions on IR management continue to be a cornerstone of our programme. This year we keep an eye on the future with advanced technologies in IR and the modern-day IR practice. These topics are vital to further pushing interventional radiology as a clinical specialty and guiding the field’s future development.
We have also organised sessions themed around special topics including Women’s Health, Trial Updates, Landmark Publications and Life outside IR.
The next generation is crucial for the future of our specialty. In acknowledgement of this, we will host a fantastic Foundation Day organised by BSIRT. We also look at the role of innovation in IR and how we can incorporate it into training through our keynote speakers.
Accommodating the growing need for interventional radiologists who are training to treat stroke patients, for the first time we present our stroke thrombectomy session in Neuro-interventions. As the demand increases, we think this session will grow exponentially to explore more complex topics in this field.
Through all the educational content, we recognise the need for some down time. So don’t forget to attend the extremely popular IR quiz at the end of day 2, where you get to watch some of our “experts” tackle some intense questioning!
For those who like it, we also have hands-on sessions in the ever-popular Active Learning Zone as well as the more interactive Masterclasses. We have always found these very popular with our trainees and younger IRs, and we intend to keep up that trend.
At BSIR we remain blessed with a close-knit community. Thanks to the dynamic pool of up-and-coming female IRs, we are confident that this will give stronger representation to women in the specialty and thus attract more female medical students to our field.
Newport will provide a marvellous backdrop for BSIR 2023 with the conference centre overlooking stunning views of the Welsh countryside. The International Conference Centre promises to be a venue like no other, with world-class facilities suited for an event of this size.
As you can see, there are many reasons not to miss BSIR 2023. From the educational presentations to the hands-on training, from learning the ins and outs of managing any pathology to updating your knowledge from the experts in the field. But most importantly, to get together and have a great time!
We look forward to seeing you all in Newport!
