UICC CALLS OFF THE WORLD CANCER CONGRESS PLANNED FOR MARCH 2021

Due to ongoing uncertainty surrounding the coronavirus pandemic and the disruption to travel and social gatherings into 2021, UICC has decided to suspend the World Cancer Congress planned for March 2021 in Oman.

While the coronavirus pandemic is slowly starting to lose momentum in some countries, it is still moving around the world. Millions have been impacted and more than 450,000 people have lost their lives.

The evolution of the pandemic has been highly volatile and nobody can predict how the virus will continue to threaten global health. While researchers are working at full speed to find a vaccine and medical doctors are continuously improving their understanding of effective COVID-19 treatments, it seems likely that societies will continue to protect themselves for the months to come and well into 2021.

In light of this situation, and following discussions with its partners and hosts in Oman, the UICC Board has taken the difficult decision to call off the World Cancer Congress planned for 16th -18th March 2021 in Oman. Following advice from the Omani Government, UICC concluded that delegates from around the world may not be able to travel at that time.

When the Congress was initially postponed from October 2020 to March 2021, the UICC Board and the Congress hosts in Oman were optimistic that the pandemic would be sufficiently under control by then to go ahead with such a big event. The challenges of this unprecedented health crisis are now better understood and it is clear that it would be unwise to proceed as previously planned. UICC would not wish to contribute to a return of COVID-19 to the beautiful country of Oman.

The World Cancer Congress (WCC) is a an award winning international conference which encourages effective knowledge transfer and best practices exchange amongst over 2,000 cancer control and public health experts from 100 countries.

The Oman Cancer Association(link is external) in collaboration with the National Oncology Centre of the Royal Hospital Muscat(link is external) will be hosting the 26th edition of the World Cancer Congress(link is external). The 2021 theme "The Way Forward" sets the tone of the Congress to serve as a platform for the cancer control and NCD communities to move advancements in cancer control in the right direction.

Over 3,500 delegates are expected to gather in Oman, where they will exchange best practices in an effort to make headway in the global fight against cancer. They will share lessons learned from the challenges they have encountered, build on successes and exchange useful and innovative tools that have had a marked impact at a regional, national and global scale.

The Oman Cancer Association (OCA) is honored to host the next World Cancer Congress which has been postponed to 16 - 18 March 2021 due to the coronavirus global pandemic. This will be the first time that the Congress will be held in MENA-EMRO region.

UICC believes in a holistic response to global cancer control, supporting its members and the cancer community in working together for positive impact for patients, survivors, health care providers, and other volunteers and carers managing the daily burden of this disease. We are thrilled to be partners and hosts to such a noble organisation.

‘The way forward’ is the theme for the World Cancer Congress, highlighting, quite importantly, the need for our region to work towards a future free from cancer. Networking opportunities and informative sessions will guide and inspire the region’s cancer control agenda, until the next Congress and beyond.

The programme will be comprehensive and geared to address pressing issues in cancer control regionally and internationally, from prevention through to treatment and palliation. We intend to lay a solid foundation for knowledge exchange, best practices and experience-sharing and, pivotally, take a deep dive into the role and impact of advocacy and social enterprises in complimenting the work of the government and private sectors in driving a patient-centred strategy.

Cancer doesn’t discriminate, affecting not only patients and their families, but also entire populations due to the spread of risk factors over one’s lifetime. Inter- regional understanding and collaboration is the best strategy in developing realistic international cancer control policies to not only effectively fight cancer but prevent it through advancements in early diagnosis and better pathways to what we all strive for: a cure.

Muscat’s commitment to health and hospitality is the perfect landscape for this event. We look forward to identifying our common challenges and discussing robust pragmatic solutions, while also sharing with all the participants a taste of what makes Oman such a warm, secure and spectacular tourism destination.
