Dear colleagues and friends,

On behalf of the International Society for Pediatric, Adolescent and Young Adult Diabetes (ISPAD), it is our great pleasure to invite you to attend the 47th Annual ISPAD Conference in Lisbon, Portugal, which will take place from 13 ‐16th of October 2021.

The beautiful city of Lisbon, a pearl of culture and tradition at the most western corner of Europe is the perfect place to reconnect. Hospitality and warmness are hallmarks of Portuguese people which will make you feel safe and relaxed in these critical times of pandemic crisis.

Portugal has been a country of sea-­discoveries but also a country of inclusion of people arriving from the most different regions around the globe for many centuries. In the same way, the motto of ISPAD 2021 will be “Inclusion & Innovation in Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes’’: Inclusion of people with diabetes facing different challenges in life spanning from issues at school to those of migrants in a new home.

Innovation in pediatric diabetes ranging from research in translational medicine to artificial intelligence, but also with ground­‐breaking projects from people with diabetes. The ISPAD family of pediatricians, endocrinologists and diabetologists, researchers, nurse educators, dietitians, psychologists, social workers and people with diabetes will find inspiration in a well-balanced program tailored to their needs.

The ISPAD Conference celebrating the centennial of insulin discovery is a special one. Please join us to make it so. Since these early days children with diabetes and their families still depend on insulin and on the collaboration with you, the driving force behind ISPAD.

In spite of all current challenges we need to work towards inclusion and innovation to give youth with diabetes a brighter future.
