Call for Abstracts and Videos

The call for abstracts and videos for Clinical Congress 2021, October 24–28 in Washington, DC, is now open. Start submitting abstracts and videos today.

Abstracts or videos may be submitted for the following Clinical Congress programs:

 

Owen H. Wangensteen Scientific Forum Submission

The Scientific Forum offers researchers the opportunity to present the results of their original, basic science, clinical, education, health sciences, and translational research during Clinical Congress 2021.

Who Should Submit an Abstract?

  • Surgeons and scientific investigators of all levels
  • Surgical residents
  • Medical students

What Should Be Submitted?

A 250-maximum word abstract that presents a concise summary of hypothesis-testing research—either completed or in progress—that has not been presented elsewhere or previously accepted for publication. Case reports will not be accepted and will be removed from the committee’s review. Revisions are not accepted after the deadline, including changes to the author/co-author order.

Please review the Scientific Forum Submissions Guidelines before submitting your abstract.

Accepted abstracts will be selected for ONE presentation:

  • An oral (8-minute PowerPoint presentation)
  • Quick shot (3-minute oral presentation)
  • e-Poster format (3-minute e-poster presentation)

Submitters should designate at the time of submission which of the presentation methods they prefer for presenting their research at Clinical Congress (if their abstracts are accepted).

Video-Based Education Submission

The Video-Based Education program’s mission is to educate surgeons and members of surgical teams in order to improve the care of the surgical patient as well as safeguard the standards of care in an optimal practice environment.

Who Should Submit a Video?

  • Surgeons
  • Surgical residents

What Should Be Submitted?

A video that is a maximum of 10 minutes and narrated in English. The video must be compliant with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). In addition to the video, an abstract must be submitted. The abstract requires a 250-maximum word summary of the surgical case being presented, five keywords related to your video, and one educational or technical point addressed by the video. We also ask that you provide at least two related clinical-based questions.

Please review the Video Submissions Guidelines before submitting your abstract.

Deadline: Monday, March 1, 2021 11:59 pm (CST)

Notifications will be sent the first week of June 2021. Please make sure to add acsvideoeducation@facs.org to your approved senders list.

Publication

Accepted videos will become a part of the ACS Video Library at the author’s consent.

History of Surgery Poster Session

The History of Surgery Poster Session, sponsored by the History and Archives Committee of the American College of Surgeons, offers surgical history enthusiasts the opportunity to present on their subject of interest relating to the diseases, techniques, technology, events or personalities of particular importance to the field of surgery and its subspecialties.

Who Should Submit?

  • Surgeons of all levels
  • Surgical residents
  • Medical students

What Should Be Submitted?

A 500-maximum word abstract that presents a concise summary of the historical topic being presented. Abstracts should include a layout of the historical context or background of the topic, a narrative describing the key elements of the historical subject(s) being presented, and an explanation of the significance of the topic to the history of surgery.

Please review the 2021 History of Surgery abstract guidelines before submitting your abstract.

Presentation

Twenty abstracts will be selected for in-person poster presentation at the ACS Clinical Congress.

Additional abstracts may be considered for digital presentation only.

Deadline: Monday, March 1, 2021 11:59 pm (CST)

Notifications will be sent no later than the first week of June 2021.

Publication

Authors of the winning posters may be invited to submit a paper on their topic for inclusion in a future issue of the Bulletin of the American College of Surgeons.

* A Retired ACS Fellow is an individual who has notified the College, meets the ACS definition of Retired, has been granted Retired status, and is officially listed in the ACS database as Retired. The ACS definition of a Retired member is a surgeon who is not in the active practice of providing surgical or nonsurgical patient care, participating in funded research, or performing compensated teaching or administrative duties. Questions about Retired member status should be directed to dues@facs.org.

** Additionally, the American College of Surgeons offers discounted registration fees for both member and nonmember residents and medical students. To take advantage of the discount, nonmember residents and medical students must submit a letter verifying your educational status at the time of registration. Residents should obtain a letter from their program director; students should contact their department chairs.
