Welcome to the 124th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society
The 124th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society in 2020 will be organized by the Department of Ophthalmology, Tokyo Medical University. The organizing committee consists of myself as President, Dr. Kimiko Fukushita (Vice President of the Tokyo Association of Ophthalmologists) as Vice President, and Dr. Yuichi Hori (Department of Ophthalmology, Omori Hospital, Toho University Medical Center) as Chair of the Program Committee.
This will be the first Annual Meeting of the Japanese Ophthalmological Society since the transition from Heisei to Reiwa era. Tokyo Medical University has the privilege to host the Annual Meeting again this time, since the 1961 Annual Meeting chaired by Dr. Kakichi Umazume and the 1977 Annual Meeting chaired by Dr. Harutake Matsuo. I greatly appreciate the directors, councilors and members of the Japanese Ophthalmology Society for giving us this opportunity. Also, I would like to thank the staff members of the Office of the Japanese Ophthalmology Society for their continuous generous support.
The theme of the Annual Meeting is “2020: Learn from History, Connect to the Future”. In ophthalmology, twenty-twenty (20-20) is a number or an expression that represents “visual acuity 1.0” or “good vision”. In addition, the year 2020 is a memorable year because the Olympic and Paralympic Games will take place in Tokyo, 56 years after the city first hosted the Olympic Games in 1964. The environment surrounding ophthalmology has changed remarkably during the last half century, and further developments are expected in the future. To commemorate the special year of 2020, we wish to spotlight on the achievements of our predecessors and to confirm their wisdom once again, in order to connect to future prospects. That is the reason for choosing the theme of this Annual Meeting.
Regarding the main program, in addition to general paper sessions, symposia, and educational seminars, the following have been planned:

As it is the Olympic year, we plan to provide a space for exercise (with a table tennis table) in one corner of the equipment exhibition hall, so that participants can refresh their mind and body.
To make the 4-day meeting an experience in which participants can realize the progress in ophthalmology that has been made in the past and the possibility of development in the future, Dr. Katsuhiko Maruyama, Secretary General, and other medical staff members are making preparations and at the same time looking forward to welcoming you at the meeting venue.
