The 93rd Annual Meeting of the Japanese Orthopaedic Association (JOA) will be held at the Fukuoka International Congress Center, Fukuoka Sunpalace Hotel & Hall, Marine Messe Fukuoka and Fukuoka Kokusai Center in Fukuoka City for four days from May 21 (Thursday) to 24 (Sunday), 2020.

The JOA was founded in 1926 and its first annual meeting was held in the same year. For more than 90 years since then, the JOA has grown to become one of the largest academic societies of orthopaedic surgery in the world, with its members increasing from 118 at the time of foundation to more than 25,000 today. By providing venues for presentations and discussions on research achievements, the annual meeting of the JOA has not only contributed to the progress of orthopaedic surgery, but also played a significant role in facilitating meaningful interactions among orthopaedic surgeons.

To renew our awareness of the key principles of clinical medicine with an understanding of the long, proud history and tradition of the annual meeting of the JOA, we adopted "Science and Art" as the main theme for the forthcoming annual meeting. This theme was taken from the words of Sir William Osler, the founder of medical education, "The practice of medicine is an art, based on science." Dr. Masakazu Abe, the 8th President of the Jikei University School of Medicine, defined “the art of medicine” as the integration of medical skills and the spirit of medicine that a physician should have to demonstrate those skills, and consists of four key components: sympathy, compassion, service, and informed consent. We will develop a dedicated program for the annual meeting, including keynote and special lectures related to this theme.

Fukuoka City is located in the northern part of the island of Kyushu. Thanks to its proximity to Hakata Bay, this area has served as a gateway to East Asian countries and prospered as a center of cultural exchanges and trade with these countries since ancient times. Fukuoka City still continues to develop as an administrative, economic and traffic hub of the Kyushu region. The city has excellent subway and urban rapid transit systems, as well as an international airport and port within 5 km from the downtown area of Tenjin, thus ensuring convenient access for visitors to shopping, sports and entertainment facilities, as well as natural scenery along the coast and in the mountains. Fukuoka City is known for the warm hospitality of its citizens, rich food culture, historic temples and shrines, and major Japanese festivals. In short, it is one of the most attractive cities in the world, where sophisticated urban facilities are harmoniously combined with 2,000 years of history and tradition.
