The 58th Annual Meeting of the Retina and Vitreous Society will be held in Nagasaki. It will be the first time in seven years that the Retina and Vitreous Society has been held in rural areas since Kofu. In recent years, as the number of participants in the Retina and Vitreous Society has increased, recent conferences are increasingly held in the well-equipped Tokyo and Kyoto area. There is also the problem of access in the rural areas, but you can also do sightseeing after joining the meeting. Fortunately, Nagasaki is a famous tourist destination without problems about the capacity of the accommodation, and there are two world heritage sites: the industrial revolution heritage of Meiji Restoration and the related heritage of hidden Christians. In addition, Dejima has been restored, and you can see the image of the past. Furthermore, Huis Ten Bosch regains momentum and boasts some of the most beautiful illuminations in the country.

Nagasaki is also the birthplace of western medicine. Dr. Siebold who was a famous scientist and physician achieved prominence by his studies of Japanese flora and fauna and the introduction of Western medicine in Japan, and in 1857 the Dutch doctor Pompe van Meerdervoort came to Japan to give lectures on anatomy, pathology, internal medicine, surgery, and ophthalmology at the Nagasaki Medical Education Center. Following Dr. Anthonius Bauduin brought excellent ophthalmoscopes to Japan. During the meeting period, we ask the Nagasaki University to open the exhibition room and the 150th anniversary museum of the University Library (about a 10-minute walk from the Nagasaki Brick Hall, conference place).
